The Page That Won
“That book's not for you.”
The library. Deja finds a book with a dragon on the cover. “Yes!” She opens it, and there is a long word she can't read. She tries once. It comes out wrong. Suddenly the whole page looks like a wall of squiggles. She shuts the book. “This is boring. Reading is too hard. I'm just not a reader.” And right on cue, the Can't says, “See? That book's not for you.”

Part 2
Calm the Alarm
Deja's face is hot and her tummy is tight. That's her body's alarm bell. It rings fast, before she can think. Before Deja opens the book again, she takes a slow breath.
Bloom says: Reset with Deja. Breathe in slow through your nose… and let it out even slower through your mouth. Feel the alarm get quiet.

Part 3
Flip It with YET
The Can't talks in whole sentences. “I can't read this.” “This is too hard.” “I'm not a reader.” Bloom hears it and lights up. “Add one small word: the one from Word Power.”

Part 4
Words Are Clues
Bloom hands Deja a magnifying glass. “A reader is a detective,” says Bloom. “A big word isn't a wall. It's a bunch of little clues. Every letter is a hint about a sound. Crack them one at a time.” The scary word on the page was brave.
Bloom says: Let's crack it, detective. Tap each sound-clue, then put them together.

Part 5
Ask the Page
Now Deja is curious. She reads on, and hits another word she doesn't know: enormous. “The dragon was so ENORMOUS its wings covered the whole sky.” Deja doesn't stop. A curious reader asks the page a question: what could this word mean? and looks at the clues around it.
Bloom says: Be curious with Deja. Tap the clue words that help you guess what ENORMOUS means.

Real Readers Grew Too
Bloom shows Deja a wall of readers. “Every one of them found reading hard once,” says Bloom. “They stayed curious, and they grew.”

The Tricky Word
“Too long. Give up.”
Deja turns the page, and there it is, the longest word yet: adventure. Her heart jumps. The Can't is right there: “Too long. Give up. Told you reading isn't for you.” What should Deja do?
Bloom says: This is the big one. A detective move keeps Deja reading. Pick the one she'd be proud of.

The Page Opens Up
Deja reads the whole page now: the brave knight, the enormous dragon, the grand adventure. And something happens. The squiggles turn into pictures in her head. The dragon roars right off the page. Reading wasn't boring at all: it was an adventure the whole time, waiting behind the words. “I'm a reader,” Deja thinks. “A word detective.”
Bloom says: Look how far you came. I grew this big! Tap the detective wins.

Read to the Next Kid
The next day, a younger kid sits in the library holding a book upside down. “This is boring. I can't read.” Deja knows that voice: it's the Can't, same as her first page. Her whole adventure was practice for this exact moment. She sits down beside the little one.
Bloom says: This is the best part of growing: passing it on. Pick what Deja says.

What this builds (transformative SEL): Curiosity (“I wonder”) with a thread of Agency (“I can do it”).
Use this as a short SEL and early-literacy activity. Kids may pass, point, draw, or answer out loud. Deja's one library moment gives every detective move a story to hang on, and two of the taps (sounding out the clues in Part 4, using the words around a tricky word in Part 5) are real reading practice.

Read the Hero panel so kids know Deja's goal, then let Bloom introduce the three Word Power words.
Open Part 1: The Page That Won. Ask what “the Can't” sounds like when reading gets hard.

Trauma-sensitive facilitation
Don't require reading aloud or personal sharing. Let kids pass. Validate the “too hard” feeling before pushing positivity. Never frame a struggling reader as a character flaw: a child who still finds a word hard has still won by staying curious.

Reinforce the detective moves at home: when a word looks hard, sound out the parts and blend them, use the words around it to guess the meaning, and add “yet” to “I can't read this.” Praise the trying, not just the reading.
